FLR (M) application - supporting documents

Post by jaffej » Mon Mar 23, 2020 10:26 am

I am a US citizen and have lived in the UK for the past 2.5 years, with my spouse, a UK citizen.

I am in the process of applying for further leave to remain (M) visa. I am a bit confused about what supporting documentation is required. I was under the impression that I had gathered all the required supporting documentation for the visa, however, one of the requirements listed on the checklist I received after submitting my online application was "Evidence of council tax costs for the accommodation in the UK where you live or will live". I have contacted the council and they have said it will take 15 working days to provide me with the evidence the home office requires, however, I have my bio-metrics appointment scheduled for next week. Should I ask for my appointment to be rescheduled and wait for the letter from the council, or is the supporting documentation I have gathered below enough for the application.

Proof of Accommodation
-Rental contract 2020 - jointly signed
-Letter from the landlord confirming authenticity of contract

Financial
-6 months of bank statement
-6 months of payslips
-letter from employer confirming salary

Proof of cohabitation
-2 joint bank statements
-3 joint signed rental contracts covering the past 2.5 years
-2 utility bills with joint names
-1 letter from the NHS (sponsor)
-1 tv licence letter (applicant)
-1 motor insurance letter (joint names)

Other documentation
-sponsor's passport
-letter from sponsor
-applicant's passport
-current BRP
-marriage certificate
-family consent form
-family declaration form

Many thanks,

While there's no explicit guidance I am aware of on what exactly the Home Office is looking for with the requirement (as it isn't mentioned in the immigration rules), the ideal evidence would just be a council tax bill. I suppose if you have just moved into new accommodation, this may not be available yet though it might be worth checking with the landlord to see if they have received anything. Depending on your council, you may also be able to access your council tax account online, which may provide something useful to submit. Some councils will also let you view the annual council tax due for any address via an online search. I have only ever seen people submit council tax bills in support of this requirement, the other things I mentioned are just additional ways I have come up with that might provide the information they need but obviously I can't guarantee they would work.

I can't see anything obvious missing from your list of supporting documents.
I'm just a guy on the Internet who immigrated to the UK. My opinions are based on my experience and interpretation of the immigration rules and should not be considered legal or immigration advice; your mileage may vary.

Usually it is the duty of new tenant to inform the local council regarding their moving in so that they send you the council tax bill from the date you starts living there. In past when letting agents charges an exorbitant amount of fee then usually they used to do it but most of them don't do it anymore, therefore, the new tenants must do that without delay for avoiding any chance of being erroneously be liable for anything extra. You can also register online, view and download the council tax bill same as geoeng has said.
