How do you know a reliable firm or chambers ?

hi guys,
sounds silly, but I dont have the money for expensive representative ( lawyers or barristers )

I have shortlisted a few options based on the free advice I have gotten over the phone which sounds reasonable and browsed their websites.

Reason for my question is, a firm I used in 2008 folded up 2 years later, when I recommended someone to them.

See if you can find reviews on google, check the Legal Ombudsman list to see if they have had/have any complaints against them, the same for the OISC.
