I don't think the H-1B system cares if you are coming into a private university or a public one. The legislation refers to universities or research institutions without distinguishing public from private from government.
To qualify, you have to have very high levels of education/experience &/or a particularly unusual and rare specialty.
There is no limit to the number of H-1B's that may be issued under these circumstances ... since it is so difficult to qualify this way.
Given all that, the university you interviewed at should be able to answer your question. Just ask them if they can sponsor you for an H-1B and what documents do you need to prove you are eligible ..?
One of the beauties of the H-1B (among it's many thorns) is that the individual immigrant doesn't do most of the paperwork or pay (directly). That is all the responsibility of the sponsor.
