overpayments of wtc/ctc??

Post by maniyo » Thu Apr 17, 2014 6:45 pm

hi guys,

i got my ILR on 23/1/2014 and applied for tax credit on 18/2/2014.

Recently i got award notice from HMRC and they paid me tax credit from 18/1/2014 one month back dated.I sent my passport and BRP for verification.

So technically they overpaid me from 18/1/2014 to 23/01/2014 which is i am not entitled to as it is public funds.

Do I need to inform HMRC about this ??

Thanks

It's up to you, it's arguably an admin error if you informed them when you were granted ILR.

I assume any partner did not have ILR/British status?

hi Amber,

my wife also got ILR on same date and I did not ask for any backdated payment.

Does it create any problem for naturalisation ?

No it should not. You can ring them if you wish to say you've been overpaid 5 days.

dear

in your tax credit certificate it will be mentioned that you applied in feb . and they paid one month back dated payment. its not the overpayment thats the way calculation is done in hmrc. their is no need for you to contact any one.

Technically tax credits should be backdated one month or when you first became eligible whichever is closest.
