Part-Time work on Tier 2 General

Post by stilnovisto » Tue May 20, 2014 4:30 pm

Hello!

So I've been here on a Tier 2 General visa for about 2.5 years now, and I've got an opportunity for some part-time work in my field. It looks like it's permitted:

https://www.gov.uk/tier-2-general
You can:

do a second job in the same sector and at the same level as your main job for up to 20 hours per week
First off, I'm just curious if anyone else has done this, and if there's any paperwork or notification you need to give the government first?

Second, I've got some particulars about my situation:

1) I work in publishing, full-time; this part-time job would be writing a book. However, it wouldn't be paid hourly—it would probably arrive as two or three lump payment. And it would be from my current employer—i.e., my sponsor.

and 2) This isn't a job on the shortage list.

Anyway, anybody got any experience with this? I'm mainly interested in how you notified the government and/or dealt with it when you renewed your visa. I've got to renew my visa this year and I want the whole thing to be perfectly legit.

And specifically, I just wonder if this even counts as a second part-time job, or if, because it's with my current sponsor, it would just be treated as something like overtime. And is overtime even permitted?

Any advice would be welcome!

Many thanks,

-F

Thanks for that, and yep I've seen it. Maybe I should rephrase:

Overtime work for your sponsor is permitted on a Tier 2 visa, yes?

Does it matter if they pay that overtime to you in one lump sum, or would it have to be spread out across your regular hourly paycheck?

If overtime work is indeed permitted, perhaps the best course of action would be to request my payment for writing a book be divided into units equivalent to 20 hours of my current salary, and paid out weekly...?

Thanks again,

-Frank

Pretty sure it was SOC 2010 3412 - Authors, writers, and translators (Creative).

My job title is Specialist Editor. I commission new titles, work with authors, edit and write new content for books and other media published by my company. I was originally hired as a photography specialist, though I've branched out since. The book I would write is on Photography though.

no problem working overtime in your present T2 job and one of the activities under SOC 3412 is "technical author" which is what you are proposing to do. There is no requirement re. the frequency of payments for work.
