I have recently acquired Portuguese Nationality since my parents were born in Goa, India while it was still a Portuguese Colony. The way the process worked is that their births were recognised and recorded in the national registry, followed by the same process for me. Based on this, nationality was granted. Proof of this is provided to me as Assento de Nascimento (translating to Record of Birth). Now this is an oversimplification of the whole process, but simple mentioned for the casual reader.
My doubts are as follows:
- Are birth records backdated?
- That is, what is the legal stance over when I acquired citizenship? I am interested in if it is backdated to the day I was born? Or is it simply considered a regular change with some arbitrary start date?
- Is there a formal term for this route of claiming citizenship? I would have guessed "via Ancestry", since I was born in India as an Indian while my parents were born in the colony. But then, if the answer to the last question is affirmative, I would have to guess "via Birth."
