Expired student visa and extension

Dear All,

A friend of mine who is on student visa in uk, his visa is expired few days ago. Can he still apply for his extension as he is still studying. He is saying he heard that if student visa is expired, one has to go back to home country to get a new one. Can he still apply within uk

How many days ago did it expire?
He might well be told to return and re-apply from back home. What was the reason for him allowing to expire without renewing it?

His visa was expired on July 31, 2007. He was waiting for the results to come from uni which is delayed now. No other reason.

Did home office recently change the rule to ask student to go back if their visa is expired. Dont they give u like 10 - 15 days after expiry? Because of royal mail strike and weekend, he couldnt send his application. he is planning to send on tuesday the latest

what is good idea to apply in person or by mail?
