Marriage in the UK

Post by Pollyana235 » Sat Aug 04, 2007 5:25 am

:?: friends of mine want to marry in this country. She is a UK citizen he is an asylum seeker who has lived here for 9 years from Angola. He has been offered £3000 to go back but wants to stay in Britain. He visits a police station every month. How do they go about getting married in this country. He works full time in this country as a translator.

What happened to his asylum application? Has it be refused, including his appeal, or is the application still pending?

Nothing seems to be happening to his asylum application. He seems to be in some sort of limbo.

In this case, if it hasn't been refused he may be able to get the COA. It is unlikely, but possible.

Otherwise, if they marry in the Church of England he won't need one.

I read in the papers a month ago that now if either of the applicant is under visa restrictions, then they have to apply for a COA.

And this change was brought about by the bishop of someplace.

He will now! Apparently, the C of E complained that people were abusing the 'loophole', so to speak. So now you need a COA to marry, even in the C of E, or at least a valid visa, depending on which particular C of E church you go to.

It is true that many churches are refusing to marry people who are illegal. However, if you can get a vicar who will marry you then you are fine. It is more likely if one or both parties actually attend a church and if they are both here legally, so a visit visa should be okay.

This is not a Home Office policy, it is up to the discretion of the presiding vicar.
