UK Citizenship

Post by Jenniffer » Wed Aug 06, 2014 1:04 am

Hello, not sure if I'm posting in the correct place... What I'm wondering is... I'm an American, living in the UK for 30 years now, as an Italian (I have two passports, US and Italian). If the UK left the EU would I be under any threat of deportation? And should I be applying for a UK passport now? If so, would I be able to retain my US passport as well? Thanks!

It's likely that at some point you have already attained PR.

When applying for British citizenship, you are not required to renounce your current citizenships. US and UK and Italy permit multiple nationalities.

I really doubt that the UK would ask all immigrants (or expatriates if you prefer) to leave the country if they are not british or the don't have a british work permit. It would be like the US asks all Mexicans to leave :)

Even if UK leaves the EU which is unlikely anyway it will be impossible to kick every single EU immigrant from the country. Firstly it will cost billions and secondly if will be a breach of human rights. If you have friends, girlfriend, family or even pets here you can't be sent away. What they would do is stop future immigration or limit it significantly.
