Tier 2 general visa extension

Dear All
What is the maximum duration before I can apply for extension of Tier 2 general visa. My visa is expiring on 04/10/2014, can i apply now?

once you have a new CoS apply any time before your visa expires

You can only apply 3 months before the current visa ends. Your new cos start date will be the next day of after your current visa end date.

there is no such rule

Your new cos start date will be the next day of after your current visa end date.
there is no such rule, it can be earlier, but the application has to be made within 3 months of the CoS assignment date
