Why do the scots keep on wanting independence?

What if you lived in England for a while and moved to Scotland, and after a few years Scotland became independent from the rest of the UK, what does that make you? No ILR or whatsoever?

It would depend on the laws passed at the time, though as Scotland would still be an EU state it's unlikely anything would change really.

There is no point whatsoever speculating about it so far.

Absolutely nothing has happend yet, like mym wrote. No one would know how long it would take (5-100 years!) to become independent.

Nevertheless, if it was to happen, it isn't such a big problem. People on visas would simply apply for a new one by the Scottish immigration ministry and the years spent in the UK would count towards the ILR period. Likewise, should people want to move to England, they just add what years they've already been in Scotland. I don't imagine they'd have to 're-do' the whole five-year period again.

Simple...but it's not going to happen for another decade, so this is mere speculation. Let's deal with it when the UK actually agrees to independence.

Like the others have said, even if Scotland were to become independent of the rest of the UK, such a change isn't going to happen in a hurry. In the event of it happening, there would be many, many things for which arrangements would have to be made in connection with the split - taxation, motor vehicle licensing, public transport, international treaties, licensing of professionals such as doctors, accountants... the list is wide-ranging and almost endless. Immigration matters (and nationality/citizenship matters) would among these things, and there would be, I am sure, transitional arrangements and possibly "grandfathering" for quite a long time.

Although it can be interesting to think about these things and even to speculate, I certainly would say that it's not worth worrying about at this stage!

Scotland is no more, and no less, likely to become independent than Quebec (Canada) or Catalonia (Spain).

Like the divorce of any long standing marriage, a separation between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom would involve a painful distentanglement of affairs. There is absolutely no evidence that a majority of Scots want this. They may well elect Scottish Nationalist MPs and First Ministers, but the Quebec experience shows there is a large gap between that and voting for independence with all that it entails.

If independence did come, then it is likely that ILR holders resident in Scotland would become permanent residents of Scotland under Scottish immigration laws. And could become Scottish citizens in due course. And after a transitional period, any rights to reside in the rest of the United Kingdom would expire.
