Leaving UK on a Visa Extension

Hi,

My question is - can you leave the UK and return without problems if you only have a temporary visa?

My wife has lived here with me now in the UK for 2 and a half years. She passed the Englisgh B1 exam, but despite a few attempts has not been able to pass the Life in th UK test - we are now in a position where we are going to have to apply for another 2 and a half year extension. We are going to Peru with our 2 young children in December for 4 weeks to see the family there.
