IMPORTANT PLEASE READ AS YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANOTHER RESPONSE

Below is information to our most popular enquiries, including links to relevant pages of our website: www.gov.uk/browse/citizenship/citizenship

1. RETURN OF DOCUMENTS

2. Requesting an application form

The Home Office no longer provides application forms. All applications forms are now available on our website.

You can apply here for immigration services such as visas, leave to remain, settlement and citizenship. We will help you to find and complete the form you need. Some forms are interactive; others must be printed and completed by hand.

3. Confirming receipt of applications

It is currently taking 6 weeks to acknowledge all applications.
If you sent your application by Recorded or Special Delivery, its receipt can be confirmed on the Royal Mail website at: Royal Mail

4. OUTSTANDING APPLICATIONS

5. CURRENT FEES, PAYMENT INFORMATION AND BALANCE OF FEES

6. Confirmation of Nationality Status

Our procedure for dealing with enquiries of this nature has changed. You now have 3 options:

1. You may test the strength of your claim to British nationality by submitting an application for a United Kingdom passport. Advice about the passport application process, and relevant forms, can be obtained here or by calling Her Majesty’s Passport Office on 0300 222 0000. If you are living outside the UK, you should click here.

2. You may apply to us for a nationality status certificate, using Form NS. A fee of £94.00 will be payable with this application. This fee is non-refundable.

3. You may seek advice from a professional legal adviser in private practice. A list of suitably qualified advisers can be obtained from www.oisc.gov.uk or by calling the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner on 0845 000 0046.

7. Requesting a duplicate certificate of naturalisation or registration

If certificate issued after October 1986 click here.

If certificate issued between January 1969 and October 1986

The Home Office does not hold records prior to October 1986. Prior to that date records are held by The National Archive, apart from the records of grants of citizenship between January 1969 and September 1986 which are no longer available. The National Archive should, however, still hold a card record of your details.

If a copy of this card record can be obtained from the National Archive it may then be submitted to our office along with a form NS, to request that our department provide confirmation of your British citizen status. A payment of £94 will be required with this request.

The form NS and guidance can be obtained here.

Once the NS application has been submitted and processed, the Home Office should be able to issue a letter confirming your status.

The National Archives may be contacted at:

Further information is available at:

10. Knowledge of Language & Life in the UK

For information regarding the Life in the UK test please click here

For information about ESOL courses please click here

How do I book a Life in the UK test if I don’t have one of the specified identity documents?

If you do not have suitable photo ID, you will not be able to book a test until after you have submitted your application. You should note on page 15 of the application form that you have not provided a pass notification letter as you do not have the necessary documents to book the life in the UK test. When your application is considered, the caseworker will ensure that you have provided a photograph which is confirmed by your referees as being a true likeness, before writing to you explaining how to book a test by special arrangement. When you attend the test you will be required to take a passport-sized photograph, which will be retained by the test centre and attached to your pass notification letter. You will not be given your letter – it will be send directly to us for verification.

It is important that you prepare for the test before submitting your application as you will be asked to pass your test within 21 days of us contacting you to make the special arrangements.

11. ACCEPTABLE REFEREES

12. Transfer of certificate of entitlement to the right of abode

Since December 2006 the Home Office no longer undertakes transfers of Right of Abode vignettes. All requests for Certificate of Entitlements to the Right of Abode must be submitted with a fresh application and documents supporting the claim. The fee for an application is currently £170.00.

Information on the requirements for Certificates of Entitlement to the Right of Abode, along with links to obtain the application forms, may be obtained here.

If you wish to make an allegation by post, please write to us at the following address:

You can remain anonymous, but please include as much detail as possible, including home and/or work addresses and postcodes if you have this information.

15. EEA Nationals & Family Members

If your enquiry relates to an application for residence documents on the basis of being an EEA national or the family member of an EEA national you may find it useful to refer to our website.
