Non EU Passport + EU Resident Permit traveling to UK

Hi,
I was planning to go with my friends to London for 4 days, then I realized I might need Visa for that
I have booked my flight and hotel!! :(
I am a student in Germany and I have the Resident Card valid til 2016 but I dont have a German passport.
Do I need a visa or not?
please let me know as soon as possible in order to cancel my trip in case of Visa required

I heard they only check you ID not the passport.
is that true? but still nationality is mentioned there!

You need a UK visit visa, they will check your passport for certain.
