National Insurance Number Query

Post by runie80 » Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:42 pm

Hi Everyone

We are planning to Move to UK soon.

I called UK today for National insurance number.

I was told if i will apply National Insurance number in London.

I will get an appointment date after 6 weeks

I think this is too long

Is it possible that i can apply for National insurance number from here and go for Interview on that specific date and give interview ?

Please help
*6 Weeks living in london without job for us i think is too long.

Any assistance or advice appreciated

Also what details they will ask for PPS number ?
I already have EEA family permit and i can give the address of my relatives.
In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

You can't apply for a national insuranse number until you are in the UK. It is normal to wait a few weeks until you get an appointment. However, you can look for employment and start working without one. If you get a job before you have a NI number the employer can set up an appointment for you. When we first moved here, my husband didn't have one. He worked for I think about 2 months before he had his appointment. The bummer was he was taxed at a higher rate, but he did get that back once he got the NI number.

You seem to be under a misapprehension. That is I think you think that without a NI number you cannot work. Is that what you are saying? If it is, well that is wrong. In your case it is your EEA Family Permit that gives you the ability to work, not having an NI number.

And for the record, even if someone does have a NI number that, by itself, gives no ability to work!

Confused? Remember that a NI number is issued for life, and someone might come to the UK on a temporary WP, which then expires, so whilst they still have their NI number, they would no longer have the ability to work.

You will have to apply for a NI number but you don't need one to start working. You do however need to provide proof to the company that you are legally allowed to work. The company will then assign you a temporary NI number, and as a previous poster said, you will get taxed at a higher rate until you get a NI number and your tax code is sorted out.

No, the lack of NI number has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of tax deducted. But possibly more tax until "tax code is sorted out" ... yes.

Yes, I should have put that across in a clearer manner. I don't know if I am right but it seems that your tax code only tends to get sorted out when you have your NI number assigned to you.
