First Child Passport help!

Post by webbynz » Mon Sep 22, 2014 9:12 am

Hi,

My son was born in the UK 12 weeks ago and I am wanting to apply for a British Passport for him.

I was born in New Zealand and gained British Citizenship by the fact that my father was born in the UK. My wife is also born in NZ and is here on a spouse visa.

The application form states that I am required to send:

"Evidence of one of your parents' claim to British nationality. Provide one of the following:"
- the parents' full birth certificate
- the parents' certificate of registration or naturalisation

OK, so my birth certificate will be no use as I was born in NZ. I never received a certificate of registration or naturalisation when I applied for my passport in Wellington, NZ about 5 years ago.

Does anyone know if this is actually required? I obviously need to supply my UK passport as part of his application, surely this is enough?

I've looked on the gov.uk website which states that if I want a replacement certificate, I need to contact the home office of where I got the passport issued, as it wasn't done in the UK. I called the Wellington office of the British High Commission yesterday who said that the website is wrong and that I need to contact the UK Home Office. This morning I've called them, and the numbers that I tried no longer existed and are disconnected! It really is a joke and my stress levels are through the roof.

If anyone is able to help with my situation I really would be appreciative. At this rate it's probably easier just to apply for a NZ passport.

OK, so I've just realised I'm a citizen by descent, rather than through naturalisation therefore I would never have received one of these certificates -relief.

I guess my passport should be sufficient with the application?

Thanks
