Claiming Housing benefits

Dear members

i am a british citizen,(naturalised in august)my wife is from Russian Federation and we both work full time and live in a very small studio (private landlord)

i have never claimed any sort of benefits whatsoever

i heard that you can get a council flat or a house if you register on their list? and your chances might be more if your wife is pregnant etc, landlord throwing you out,both not in our case,or poor living conditions(might be as the its a room with attatched shower and Spam cooker with no exhaust,and laundry we have to do at the landlords,unbearably cold as well at winter times),its basically a garage that landlord has converted into a sort of studio

i dont want to do anything dodgy and am wondering if i might be able to apply for housing benefits or housing and i absolutely wouldnt mind to pay the rent of council flat/house,i am assuming it might be cheaper/quality of living might be better

what are my chances and how shall i go on about it?

any help will be much appreciated

If your wife is under Immigration control you can only apply for council accommodation as a single person.

my query is ig parents have ILR and 03 kids are still on tier1 dependent visa
can we apply for housing benifits for whole family including kids
or we can only claim as couple not for kids
