Pregnant Russian partner moving to Schengen zone

Post by Kruff » Sun Oct 26, 2014 8:53 pm

Hello all,

I'm a UK citizen by birth working in Belgium for the next two years and I hold diplomatic status. I have a Russian partner who is currently pregnant with our first child.

I have a few questions which you might be able to help me with:

1. Will my partner be able to join me living in Belgium for the next couple of years, given that I'm not a permanent resident in Belgium? Would she be better coming before or after giving birth?

2. Will the child automatically be entitled to UK citizenship at birth, assuming that he/she won't be born in the UK? Will it make a difference if he/she is born in Belgium or Russia?

3. Would they be able to move from Belgium to the UK once my post in Brussels is over or would they need to return to Russia first?

4. Would being married help?

Many thanks for your help, I do appreciate any answers you guys may have. Apologies also if this is posted in the wrong forum but I couldn't find a category that it fits neatly into..!

If you hold diplomatic status, none of the usual rules apply to you - you should know the specifics better than any of us!

Ask your relocation department. I don't know about the UK but the German Foreign Office takes extremely good care of their Diplomats' families and are very helpful, I expect it should be similar.
