HSMP - earning from abroad

Post by RAJ2007 » Fri Aug 31, 2007 4:37 pm

I have got a query re. my friend. He wants to apply for HSMP.

He has got masters degree (recognised by NARIC) - 35points
He earns around 23k in UK, but he has got other earning in overseas country (Banked in overseas currency) by doings jobs through internet (web designing). He has read the previous earning section of the HSMP.
Questions

-His question is that 'he is living and residing in UK', therefore would be able to show that overseas income towards earning points?
-If so, will the points be given on the basis of that country's income band ?
-Also, what sort of documents he needs to show to prove that income - is Chartered Accountants declaration and the bank statement sufficient to prove that income?

Please advise.

Your friend can claim earnings from any country, but it will all be counted in the UK income band (and, unless I am very much mistaken, he should have been paying tax on all of it in the UK). The documents that he would need to provide would be based on the contractual relationship governing that work; is he an employee, or is he an independent contractor ? Others (including me) have done what's often referred to as 'freelance' work, and it counts as independent contracting. If such is the case with your friend, then he should look at the requirements for independent contractors in the guidance notes: he'll need invoices (payment advices), contracts, the most recent tax return, and bank statements.

He has been paying tax in overseas country because earning is in overseas. In that case will the CA 's statement (in abroad) and also bank statement will it not be sufficient to prove the earning?

Even with the CA's letter as a substitute item, submitting only two of the four pieces of evidence for an independent contractor is not likely to be sufficient.

I do not think CA 's statement is relevant here as it is nothing mention on the guidelines as an acceptrable piece of evidence. I think U understand why they do not accept CA statement as piece of evidence.
