Born in commonwealth, qualify for UK citizen?, Advice?

Post by nathmaniedeo » Wed Sep 05, 2007 7:19 pm

Hi - I was wondering if anyone had any insight that they could share with me or advice.

I was born as a US citizen in the island of Trinidad & Tobago in 1978.

(My mom is American and my father Trinidadian)

So, although I have a US citizen and passport, I have dual citizenship being born in Trinidad. Going back far enough, I'm also part English.

Is there any way for me to qualify and become a British Citizen or at least ILR?

(any advice is very much appricated) (I live in the US)

Where were your grandparents born? Do you have Trinidadian citizenship?
I am not, and cannot, offer legal advice to particular people. I can only discuss general areas of immigration law.

Born in the US

my grandparents on my moms side were born in the US (far back enough some in England I think)
Fathers side grandparents were born in Trinidad.

I believe that I do have Trinidadian Citizenship since I was born there. I have a birth certificate.

Sorry, I think there's no obvious route to UK nationality for you other than those open to all non-EU nationals, or those open to Commonwealth nationals.

I think if you'd been born a few years earlier you could have got British overseas citizen passport

No chance of any U.K. immigration outcome, sorry. In order to qualify for the Ancestry Visa, a grandparent must have been born in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

Your Trinidad passport does entitle you to obtain a working holiday visa for the U.K. however. Start at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk

If that were the case then every Trinidadian citizen would have the right of abode in the UK, which of course they don't.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.
