EEA Citizen Naturalisation, but not working last year

Post by mellowd » Sat Dec 20, 2014 9:33 pm

Hi.

I am a South African who is now a dual British/South African Citizen for the last four months. My wife is a Hungarian national. We have been married for almost 9 years.

When my wife first came to the UK, she registered on the worker registration scheme. She has worked in the UK from 2004 right up until 2013. Since 2013 my wife has stayed at home and not worked, fully supported by me.

My wife has had permanent residence (same time as I got it) back in 2012.

We want to get her UK citizenship. I'm happy with most points, but a bit concerned about my wife not working for the past year. i.e. no national insurance paid on her part. I have BUPA from work which I'm not entirely sure covers the 'medical insurance' part. Not only this, but I've also been transferring over £1000 a month into her account as she does the shopping etc. i.e. she is not a drain on the state. In fact we've not once claimed a single benefit as had no need to.

Is this last year going to be a problem or not? Her name is on all the bills, but without working, how does she PROVE she has actually been here? Also, is the fact that she has not paid NI for the last year going to be a problem? We have not used the NHS in that time, but officially we would be reliant on the NHS at first if anything did go wrong in that time.

Has anyone had a similar experience like this?

Thanks

Once your wife has acquired PR, she does not have to exercise treaty rights any longer, i.e. her not working will not cause any problems during her application for naturalisation.

To prove her residence you can use bank statements, utility bills or tenancy agreements for example.
