Using Employer as a refree

Hello,

I am slightly confused at the moment regarding the following questions related to the referee. It will be great if somebody can help me!

1) I was wondering if it is possible for me to use my Company's Director as one of my referee?
2) One of the requirement is that the referee "have known the applicant personally for more than 3 years", For the question, how do you know the applicant, I am not sure what can he use, we are not really friends although I have worked for him for more than 3 years, can somebody suggest any phrase, I am thinking Co-Worker?

My referees (our accountant and the managing director) were the same as yours.
