Changing from Spouse Visa

Can anybody tell me how easy it is to change their status from being here on a spouse visa to being here through work permit. The reason I ask is my Turkish husband, we separated while I was pregnant is adamant that because I have reported the breakdown of our marriage to immigration, will be allowed to stay here as he has a job. He hasnt contributed anything to the upkeep of our 10 month old son and asks to see him every 3 weeks, basically he is a waste of space time and energy.
I was under the impression that to stay in the UK in April when his Spouse visa expires he would have to leave the UK and reapply in his own rights from his home country? Can anybody clarify?

Things are different for Turkish nationals...he may qualify under the Ankara Agreement.

i just want to say that a human being is never a waste of space. just because it did not work for you and him does not mean he or you are to blame he may be happy with some one else.
