can I become a irish national by a gran that isnt blood?

Post by carlmad » Sun Mar 15, 2015 5:52 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm really stressed and need some help please.

Me and my Mexican girlfriend are getting married and we wanted to live in the UK (Im british) however ive recently found out that thanks to the tories I need to make £18600 a year which is ridiculous and cant afford. My next idea was to go to Ireland with her as I can do that being a EU citizen. However I'm terrified the dearly beloved UKIP will either get into power or (more likely) join a coalition with the tories and there is a chance we are out of Europe, if that is the case I wont be able to go to Ireland with her as would need a visa myself.

here is my question, im desperate to get irish nationality with british as a duel. My nan is irish but she is not blood, my real nan died when my dad was 10 but she is the only nan ive ever known. Can someone give me advice on how that would work, could I get citizenship?

Thank you

Carl

From what you are saying you are not automatically entitled to Irish citizenship.

I personally think you are a bit overworried about the EU exit thing, but in any case the UK and Ireland have tights which are stronger that what is requested by the EU. I am pretty sure UK and Irish national laws allow for citizens of the other country to freely settle in and even vote to elect the national parlialement (i.e. a British citizen living in the Republic of Ireland can to elect a TD).

Also if you move to Ireland and work there, you are entitled to citizenship after 5 years.
