Belgian Nationality Question

Post by picosam » Tue Sep 25, 2007 6:38 pm

I'm an Egyptian and I'm going to get married to my girlfriend who's a Belge living currently here with me in Egypt.
1. Can we get married in the Belgian consulate with no problems (which means, marriage will be recognized as if we were in Belgium)?
2. We are going to be living here in Egypt for at least one more year. Does this year count towards the 3 year residence requirements for naturalization?
3. If I want to travel to Belgium for a short period and come back to Egypt, without her, is it possible under family reunification law?
4. What happens if we decide to move somewhere else other than Belgium next year? Do we have to stay inside Belgium for 3 years before I can apply for Belgian nationality?

Thank you!

I don't think the Belgian embassy will perform your marriage unless you are both citizens of Belgium. You will have to be married under Egyptian law and they can recognize your marriage after following embassy proceedures.

Thank you. I did read it but I don't understand two things:
1. "This period is reduced to six months if, for a period of at least three years preceding the date upon which you submit your declaration, you were authorized to stay in Belgium for more than three months or to settle in Belgium." How do I get such authorization? Can I get this authorization and then go live with my wife somewhere else in Europe, would that still count?
2. "Residence abroad can be equated with residence in Belgium if you can prove that you have genuine ties with Belgium." Again, how can I do this? What kind of ties are they talking about?

Thank you.

Thank you. However that is not a problem, we can get married in Egypt legally with no restrictions :)
