Question regarding travel withour PR in passport

I applied in November for naturalisation after 6 yrs, (spouse of eea national)

Still waiting approval.

My question is, I would like to take a holiday, was thinking if I ask for my passport back, can I travel without a valid visa, as I applied without PR. my 5 year eea family permit is expired.

Is it possible to apply for PR whilst my naturalisation is being processed, as I am not sure which will be quicker.

So stressed out, feeling like a prisoner right now.

I think it's better to just get PR done before naturalisation, at least you can travel freely while they take forever to decide.
