I contacted UKVI today for a few Form AN / naturalisation matters (btw, only on hold for 2-3 minutes before someone answered), and clarified with them that company directors are treated as self-employed by UKVI ("because you pay yourself" was the reason given) and so would need a Self-Assessment Statement of Account. They confirmed that printing out the statement from the hmrc website is acceptable, since it's only accessible to yourself and your accountant. A document from HMRC on HMRC letterhead was not necessary.
