non-EEA national to marry Irish citizen

Post by geekygal » Mon May 11, 2015 7:39 pm

My boyfriend (Irish citizen, living in Ireland) and I (American citizen, living in US) are planning to get married within the next couple of years, if not sooner, so long as we can work out all of the details.

A little backstory:
I've almost ripped my hair out trying to figure out the K-1 fiancee visa because the initial plan was for him to come here, get married here, and live here. I have since discovered the non-EEA family permit which seems to be the better option for our situation, but now has us rethinking our plans. Now, we would be getting married and living in Ireland with myself on the non-EEA family permit.
After further research, we have found an awesome checklist for exactly our situation:

My question is basically this: Do we have to marry in Ireland to get the permit? I see no reason why we cannot see the Registrar in person to get the Marriage Registration Form at least 5 days before the marriage, then have the wedding where-ever (ideally it would be in the US).

An EEA family permit is for EU citizens resident in Ireland looking to bring over their non EU spouse. Not Irish citizens.

This is what you need to look at - http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/WP07000024

I don't understand how this link is any different than the one I provided in my initial post? Please explain. He is a national. I will edit my post. And it still does not answer my question.

EEA family permit does not apply to your situation (it is a UK only concept and is for non EEA family members of EU citizens living in the UK).

Back to you: You can just get married anywhere you like, then come to Ireland, and do this: http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/WP ... howtoapply

Very simple process and it is free of charge.
