Amendment to Immigration Act 1971

Prompted by Lord Avebury, Lord Goodhardt, Lord Bassam of Brighton it now appears that childern born before 1961 outside of the UK of a British Mother and foreign Father will be eligible for British citizenship.

This is once the Bill will be introduced sometime in November 2008 or this is the indication at this point in time.

Either way it is a small victory for those effected by this. But a victory in gender equality.

It's worth pointing out that most of those affected by this have already got entitlement to Right of Abode, as they are Australian, Canadian, and New Zealander (or Irish, where ROA is de-facto available).

South Africans are an excluded group, but most of them have got access to the Ancestry Visa.

The largest single nationality to benefit will be Americans (plus a sprinkling of others from a wide variety of nations).
