Early enquiries into working/immigrating to The Netherlands

Post by Frances Hepburn » Mon Oct 15, 2007 11:43 am

Hi,

My boyfriend (an EU passport holder) is in the early stages of being offered a job in Eindhoven in The Netherlands. I am a South African citizen. I would like to find out about coming with him to The Netherlands and I would want to work there. Has anyone got any advice or ideas on where I start with this ie. Websites, people who have been there/done that I can correspond with?

Thank you,
Fran Hepburn

In that case, bear in mind that if citizenship is your goal, it will be a significantly easier pathway in the United Kingdom.

Are there any plans to have children together? If so, was your partner born in South Africa or in the U.K.?

And Thank you - I found plenty of very useful information on the IND website.

The job he is being offered is basically a transfer within the company he currently works for and it is very specialised so he will be coming to Holland specifically, the UK is not an option at the moment.

We are not sure about children yet but it is a possibility. He was born in Zimbabwe (father british) but grew up in South Africa.

You need to be aware then that he is British "by descent" and hence any children you have born in the Netherlands (or elsewhere outside the U.K.) will not automatically be British citizens at birth.

A child born in the Netherlands to foreign parents is not normally a Dutch citizen either.

Be careful, because this info probably does not apply exactly to your situation.

If you are currently living outside the Schengen area, you should apply for a visa at a Dutch embassy. State you are having a permanent relationship with a Dutch citizen, submit a form about this you both sign, and apply for a free visa to be able to submit the verification against EU law, once you are here.
