T2 General visa extension application timelines

Hi,
My wife is currently working in the uK on Tier2 General visa (from Aug-2013 till Aug-2016).
Her Tier2 General visa is expiring in Aug-2016. How many months before can she apply for extension?
Can she apply for extension in Mar'2016 which is 5 months before her visa expires?
