Absence from UK

I am currently filling the PR from and stumble upon this question:

- If you were or your sponsor was absent from the UK for more than six months in any 12-month period, please indicate the reason for the absence by ticking the relevant box below;

Does this address to any 12 month period (sept-sept, march - march) or to calendar year strictly speaking (e.g. Jan - Dec).

Thank you. I note the 2-year absence rule, but the 6 months absence in any 12 months is the more relevant to most at the moment. I hope Uk will accept my application for it as I have another year to complete.

PS Is being over 6 months in one of the years for a reason (medical emergency in the family) good to take tally of that year? What is HO position on this?
