I came to the UK in 1992 on a 1 year working Visa. After one year, situation in my home country made it impracticable for me to return home. I then applied to remain in the UK as an asylum seeker but my application was rejected and I was asked to return home. Through my solicitor, I made a further application to stay in the UK. I was asked to come to an immigration reporting office in London once a month to sign on while my application was being heard. That application went on for the next 20 years! During this time, to support myself, I survived on hand outs and working illegally with my national insurance number I had when I was legal in the UK. I also reported to this centre diligenltly for 20 years as required. In 2012, I heard that the Government was going to try to clear a back-log of 400,000 asylum cases. Not long after I heard this, I received a form in the post (from my lawyer) from the home office asking to fill and return to them. Just personal stuff such as DOB,name, current address etc to sign and return. A few months later, I got another letter from the home office telling me that my application for asylum had been cancelled but I was being given "leave to remain". I was asked to take the letter to 'biometric centre' where my finger prints and picture were taken and a few weeks later, a biometric "residency card" came in the post in which I was given a 3 year leave to stay due to expire next month (August 2015). I was wondering what form to fill or how to apply to extend my leave to remain. Someone advised me that I had to go through the "10 year private route" but Im not sure. Someone else told me that I have to apply as an asylum seeker again. Can anyone advise me on what to do? I apologise about the long post but I wanted my situation to be understood. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
