Will I need to extend my stay for a Schengen National D Visa

Post by dmurray » Mon Jul 20, 2015 9:18 pm

So I'm a US citizen studying in Europe this fall. I'm planning on traveling for 14 days before my semester starts. On my application, I specified that my stay would be 124 days which included the travel period. However, the visa was issued to begin August 25 when I need it to begin August 11 at the start of my travels.

My question is: do I need to extend the visa to cover these 14 days or would I be covered under the 90 days US citizens are permitted to be in the Schengen area? i.e. are those 90 days in addition to a type D national visa?

thanks!

Just to clarify: Italy issued my national visa as I'll be studying there, and my travel plans are through various Schengen countries and the UK.

The problem is to activate the visa typ d.
You could enter the schengen area on the rights of your american passport and leave it for the UK. UK is not part of schengen. If you come back to the schengen area on August 25 or later you can let stamp your visa.

Thanks for the reply. I have a flight booked from Spain to Italy (where I'm studying) on August 25th. If I were to travel up until the 25th and then fly from the UK to Spain at that time do you think I should get my visa stamped in Spain or Italy? Would it matter?

It doesn't matter which schengen country stamp the visa.
You should see my suggestion as a precaution.
Formally a visa has to be stamped on.
If a entry stamp for a visa free entry somewhere in the passport is accepted for a visa with later beginning date is up to the border officer/police officer and can lead to discussions.
Btw. a flight from Spain to Italy is intra schengen and there is no border control. It is like a domestic flight.

Thanks for the reply. However, my university's international office confirmed I would not have to leave Schengen as my visa would be activated automatically on the 25th.
