Dual Greek/UK nationality

Post by alouette » Sun Oct 28, 2007 10:25 am

Hi

I have dual Greek and UK nationality. I am planning on travelling to Greece in January 2008. Do I need to use my Greek passport to travel to Greece and my UK passport to travel to the UK, or can I just use one passport for both countries as they are both EU member states?

I don't think there is an issue here, given that both on arrival in Greece and also back in the UK the EEA/Swiss passport channel can be used.

So I conclude .... your choice.

You should be able to enter any EU country using any valid EU member state issued passport.

Except that:

- it would be worth ensuring that Greece does not insist that Greek citizens use a Greek passport; and

- bear in mind that Greek passports issued prior to 2006 are generally invalid for travel.

Directive 2004/38/EC is pretty clear that you should be given entry if you have a passport (or ID card) of a EU member state. A UK passport is one of these. I don't think they can legally turn a Greek citizen who happens to be traveling on another member state passport or ID.

Why are Greek passports issued prior to 2006 not valid for travel to other EU countries, and for entry to Greece itself? They may not be valid for entry to the US, but the US is extra picky these days.

Because the Greek government invalidated them:
