Italian ID card??

Post by Demessiah » Mon Oct 29, 2007 10:55 am

Hi

I'm not completely sure this is the right place to ask this question, but I'm hoping someone might know.

My mum is a Italian citizen, my father british. I was born in England. Am I eligible for an Italian ID card (I've been under the impression I was, but am not sure)? How would I go about getting one if I am eligible?

As a child, I was on my mums (italian) passport, but now have my own british one. (she still has hewr old passport with me on, her current does not have me on)

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks in advance.

If you were born after 1948 then you are an Italian citizen. As such you are eligible for an Italian ID card of the "valida per l'espatrio" type (which can be used to enter and leave the country). However, I don't think you can obtain an ID card from outside Italy. Why do you need one, just out of curiosity? An Italian ID card is not terribly useful outside Italy.

Cheers Marco

Azzurri are playing scotland in the euro qualifiers in scotland and me and my brother are trying to get tickets.

FIGC are only giving tickets for the italy end to people who can prove they are italian citizens..... We wouldn't be able to get the ID in time for this match but, if the FIGC are going to be doing things like this from now on (We've watched them play before with no problems), we may as well get it sorted.

So we are eligible.....we can't do it through our local italian passport office (bristol) or cardiff? Do we do it throught the post office in italy?

Italian IDs are not issued on the basis of nationality, but are based on residency. You live in Italy, you can apply for an Italian ID, you don't, you can't. What you can do and what you should do, is to apply for an Italian passport. This will be quite useful to you, much more than an ID and it is equally valid as proof of identity. It certainly proves your nationality in a way IDs don't.

I'm not Italian, but, as I live in Italy and am resident here, I hold an Italian ID.

You should be, if your mother is Italian. Ask the Italian consulate: they'll tell you. Do you have an Italian birth certificate? Is your mother registered at the AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero. This is a register of Italians resident abroad)? Unless your mother has renounced her Italian nationality you can claim through her and even if she did, there are ways she can get it back.

well, at a guess I'd say she wasn't on the AIRE register (tho she does occasionally getting voting slips through?), but she still is an Italian citizen, and has an Italain passport.

It sounds like you are definitely a citizen. You were on your mom's passport and see http://www.amblondra.esteri.it/Ambascia ... tadinanza/

It looks like you can register for an ID card from London. See http://www.amblondra.esteri.it/Ambascia ... /Anagrafe/

In fact it looks like you have to be registered in the AIRE to get a passport http://www.amblondra.esteri.it/Ambascia ... assaporti/

You should contact the embassy.

I don't see anything on the website about applying for an Italian ID in London. You are eligible for an Italian passport, but it may take a very long time to get one if you are not registered with the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (AIRE). They might ask you to register with AIRE before you apply for a passport, and the process usually takes a few months. They probably don't see people in your position very often. Italians must have an official place of residence (residenza). This can either be at a comune in Italy or abroad. Italians living abroad are required by law to register with AIRE, but there are no penalties for failing to do so.

I would definitely make photocopies of your mother's passport with you on it, and take the original to the consulate when you apply for your passport.

Provided that his mother did not lose her Italian citizenship before he was born. This would generally have happened if she became naturalised British before 15 August 1992.

I've done some research and I see you cannot apply for an ID from outside Italy. You can, however, once you are in Italy, do it by going to the comune (it will be the one your mother last lived in) with your passport and applying there.

Your best bet is to get a passport. The only use I find for the ID is that, if you lose it, it much less of a hassle to get a new one, but, if you live in the UK, even this advantage will be lost.

Apparently some Italian consulates do issue ID cards, but the website of the London one says nothing about it. In any case, I think it would be best for the OP to apply for a passport. The OP should contact (either by phone or by post) the nearest Italian consulate and ask to register with AIRE. They will send him a form which he will need to sign and send back. It would be useful to ask about timescales. For me it took about 6 months to register, but I had previously been resident in Italy and that may have slowed down the process.

Incidentally, as a citizen registered with AIRE you are able to vote by post in Italian elections and are entitled to a discount on passport fees.
