FRC issued non UK EU country

Non EEA national family member of Brit national granted RC from another EU country with as usual five year duration. Law allow RC holder to come and stay in UK for limited period. RC holder along with Brit would like to come and stay in UK for 3/4 years for his study. Can he stay that long on capacity of RC? Or any circumstances - can he stay longer ie treatment or any? Thanks for help
