What does my passport say about me?

Post by mattgrange » Sun Nov 11, 2007 6:17 pm

As a British passport holder how can I find out what information the immigration officer can see about me when they swipe my passoport when coming through immigration in a US airport?

Thanks

You can't. But why would you care?

Longer answer is go to the USCIS site and download a form G-639 (Freedom of Information Act request).

I care because last time I entered the US, the immigration officer told me it would be the last time I would be allowed in, and that he was putting a note of that on my 'account' or whatever it is.

Think that's likely??

I did! I was asking if it's likely he made a note of it on their computer system, is that a normal thing to do?

Was just looking for some advice!!!

And why would he have told you that?

How much time were you spending in the United States? (they do get upset if they think you are trying to live in the U.S. as a tourist)

It really depends on what happened. Did you overstay? If so, then they will probably know the next time you enter the US. Getting a new passport wouldn't change anything. They will have a record with your name, place and date of birth.

.

Why you were told such a thing is pretty important information. It would tell us how serious your conflict with immigration was.

Also, how long ago?

If it was some minor infraction ten years ago, the official may have just been pissy & having a go at you, and the information may well be lost.

If the infraction was serious, you can bet odds are in favor of it still being on your record. The question is then, are any penalties still applicable ...?

If you were told last year, you're probably going to have some issues.

If it was ten years ago, then any ban against your entry may have been lifted. Depending on what you were being reported for.

In todays world, I urgently suggest that you may trust government databases to retain information on you.

This is true. However, if they have a record of him overstaying he may not be allowed to use the VWP again, even if the ban has expired.
