Status awaiting application result

Please I need any advice if anyone has been in this situation before. I am on marriage visa and it expired sept 10 2015, i submitted application for renewal on 10/08/15. I got biometrics letter and has gone for biometrics. When my visa expired , my employers sacked me because i didnt provide evidence of my submission to home office on time because i lost my biometric letter. Even though i told them verbally long before my visa expired that i made application to renew.
I called home office to help with my case reference number, which i was able to get after 25 days my visa expired. I know rules say i can continue working as long as I Submit application before my visa expires but my employer needs to make verification with the home office within 28 days after my visa expires. I was able to give my employers my reference number 25 days within the 28 days home office requires.
But my employer did not verify my status with the home office before sacking me. They claim to get result from home office will take 10 days and by then the 28 days grace would have expired and they could be fined £20000 for employing illegal worker, despite me submitting my application before my visa expires. Please friends what are your opinions on this matter.
