Hi there

I have just graduated as a doctor in cape town, South Africa. I wish to move to germany to be with my boyfriend, and take up a job there as a doctor. I have a south african passport though. I am confused about the process of applying for a work permit as all list of requirements say that I need a job offer before I can get the work permit. I can only apply for the permit from outside Germany though. How do I secure a job without being there for an interview? Fly to germany, get a job, fly back, apply for the visa and then go back again? Also, apparently the work permit is only valid for that job. If I change jobs do I need another work permit (and again, have to fly back to SA to do so?)

Lastly, could I get a residence permit/schengan visa and only seek employment and a work permit once there?

Be wary of the stringent German language test, you don't want to mix up body part names!

You'll get a Residence Permit that is tied to the company named on the RP, if it's the same process as for my gf.

My gf got the job offer whilst outside Germany (this was a uni placement), and was issued with a single-entry visit visa which she was told (ie ordered, this is Germany) to exchange immediately at her nearest Auslanderbehorde for the WP/RP proper when she arrived in Germany.

She changed jobs for the second placement and did that in-country in Germany.

All sounds quite easy but believe me it was nightmare. One thing all expats in Germany agree on is that the myth of German efficiency and organisation is a total fallacy.

I suggest you read the following website for advice about German work permits:

I hope you speak fluent German, because if you don't you will find it close to impossible to find a job...
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

I second that and stress it, especially if you want to work as a doctor! Unless you're able to secure a job at a private medical centre that caters to English-speaking expats or something...
