Hello everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and hopefully provide some assistance.
I recently came to the UK from Vietnam on a spouse visa to live with my British husband. We were married in Vietnam in 2014 but unlike the UK women in my country keep their maiden names. I want to use adopt my husband's surname for all purposes in the UK (I cannot change my name to my husband's in my country) and have followed the advice of an immigration lawyer to make all official applications in this country using my married name:
[Vietnamese first name] [Married surname]
rather than the one on my passport and BRP card:
[Vietnamese surname] [Middle name 1] [Middle name 2] [Vietnamese first name]
I have already made a successful application to open a bank account in my married name and am awaiting the results of a NI Number application made in my married name.
According to guidance on the gov.uk website I should inform them within 3 months of any changes to the personal details on my BRP card including name change. However, I'm uncertain that my name has 'changed' since arriving in the UK. I used my maiden name on my passport on all visa application forms and documents because I had no identification with my married name on it.
IS there any way to make my married name more official here? Unfortunately I cannot change my passport name as my country does not allow it. I have made a deed poll document myself signed by a witness. Another option I considered was to register my marriage again at the local registry office but I'm not sure if that is the right thing to do.
