Dilemma: Accommodation for Settlement Visa

Post by mfong77 » Sat Dec 01, 2007 6:54 am

Hi all,

Need your advice again.

My husband (who's British) has just returned to UK after spending some time with me in Malaysia.

Now we are preparing to apply for the Settlement visa.

He has just rented a flat in UK recently, with renewable 6-month contract. He's living alone and I will join him once I obtain my visa. Then we will move out when the rental contract expires and find another place together.

In the meantime, we are wondering which is wiser for visa application purpose: to use his parents' address and explain that we're staying with his parents instead (with letter from his parents and use all docs of his parents' home and any supporting docs including some bills in his name sent to his parents' home) OR to state the actual is situation?

What worries us is the fact that the immigration may question the 6-month contract only and not longer if we state the actual situation. Will the fact that he signed only for 6-month be viewed negatively (seeing that by the time I get to UK, there are probably only 2-3 months left of the contract)?

As mentioned, there's no intention of renewing the contract as we might want to move elsewhere and search for a place together... Thus, we cannot provide any other contracts besides the current one. We are concerned that the immigration might perceive that we have nowhere suitable to stay eventually.

Please do help to give your opinions. I deeply appreciate any advice you guys give. Thank you!!!

6 month rentals are the normal period, so it won't look odd.
I am not, and cannot, offer legal advice to particular people. I can only discuss general areas of immigration law.

People should always consider obtaining professional advice about their own particular circumstances.

Thanks Amanda for your reply!

Another question is - is it necessary to get the landlord to write a letter about this rented accommodation?

Or it will suffice if we just provide the contract AND enclose some pics of the place?

Thanks in advance!!!

good idea to get a letter from the LL.

If your name is not on the contract then the landlord letter is essential.
