Route into UK?wssw wrote:Hi all,
My wife (Canadian) does not qualify for a Youth Mobility visa since we have a dependent. Is there an alternative route? She is a school teacher. I am a UK (dual with Canada) citizen, as is our son. We are in the process of doing Surinder Singh, but I find it hard to believe there's not another visa option available to a woman whose immediate family is British.
Since I don't currently live in the UK, I wouldn't meet the financial requirements to sponsor her.noajthan wrote:Route into UK?wssw wrote:Hi all,

There is the UK immigration route: spouse visa.
She does not. French Canadian ancestry though and through. However, as a Canadian, she has given her oath to the Queen! Too bad that doesn't count as anything.vinny wrote:Does she have UK ancestry?
Presumably that's what made her Canadian - there is no 'British Empire' anymore.wssw wrote:She does not. French Canadian ancestry though and through. However, as a Canadian, she has given her oath to the Queen! Too bad that doesn't count as anything.vinny wrote:Does she have UK ancestry?
Actually, being born in Canada to Canadian parents made her Canadian. I was simply alluding to the futility of the commonwealth.noajthan wrote:Presumably that's what made her Canadian - there is no 'British Empire' anymore.wssw wrote:She does not. Have you looked at France (ancestry)?
SS is your best & probably only bet then and you're on it.wssw wrote:Since I don't currently live in the UK, I wouldn't meet the financial requirements to sponsor her.
That's true. I think though, part of our reason for coming to Ireland instead of Malta was that it is somewhat on the way back to Canada, which is where we'll happily go if SS doesn't work out!noajthan wrote:SS is your best & probably only bet then and you're on it.wssw wrote:Since I don't currently live in the UK, I wouldn't meet the financial requirements to sponsor her.
As you may have heard, there are weird things happening in Ireland (& UK) vis a vis free movement; (eg sounds of goalposts moving);
if need be, you could jump ship and make somewhere like Malta your plan B (/C) - as discussed before!
Well, East or West home is (sometimes) best.wssw wrote:That's true. I think though, part of our reason for coming to Ireland instead of Malta was that it is somewhat on the way back to Canada, which is where we'll happily go if SS doesn't work out!
We're definitely subject to a lot of changing taking place with the EU though, as you mentioned. I'm trying to keep on top of it all. Are you referring to anything in particular, or more to Brexit in general and in addition to the migrant crisis?
