British citizenship by descent

Post by MilanNS » Fri Dec 21, 2007 7:59 pm

I was born on 25th of January 1988 in Yugoslavia, to British father (born in 1955 in the UK) and Yugoslav mother. My father is a British citizen otherwise than by descent. Is it possible for me to obtain British citizenship (by descent) and how? What documentation will I need?

Thank you.

British citizenship by descent

If your father was married to your mother at the time of your birth then you are automatically British citizen by descent. If they subsequently married after your birth, then you had to be legitimated.

If you are British, then the documents you would need would be equivalent to those when applying for a British passport.

And just to add to that, if you are already British by descent, you can just apply for a British passport.

What is the view of your other country about dual nationality?

Dual nationality is allowed in Serbia.
Where can I get my father's birth and marriage certificates? Is it possible to get them by mail?

Thanks again for your help.

As well, have a look at the website of the General Register Office in the UK: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/.
