OCI Application and travelling

Hello,

Now that the use of sticker has been discontinued, do they keep the passport with them throughout the OCI application process? I was planning to travel around mid of May so not sure if I should apply for my son's OCI now or only after my travel.

Also, for minor's application, do I have to upload kid's thumb impression (whilst filling up online OCI application form) or my signature as a parent?
