help please(ireland&enlgand)

Post by animesh » Wed Dec 26, 2007 6:28 pm

first of all i wanna thank all the people running this useful forum. its a great site.. i am dipesh( nationality nepali) from portugal. i have a permanent resisdency. valid until 2012. i am married to a portuguese since two years. we were thinking about moving to ireland or enlgand... and in the process my wife called to the irish embassy in portugal about what i need for a visa. they told us that i can just apply for a tourist visa. and if i want a visa to live and work, first of all she has to go to ireland, find a contract work, accomodation and only then she can apply for my visa. but as a spouse of a eu citizen do i have a right to accompany my wife? or i have to wait till my wife goes first and get settled there... or do i have some othere options..... i would be very thankful for the help..........

I don't intend to put you off..but stay away from Ireland if you can...that is not the country that have good immigration laws laid out...it is a pain...I lived there for a long while and fed up with it although got a good job, decide to move out last year...poor school system, healthcare and crime...and mind blowing cost of living..negative attitude towards immigrants(non-irish, regardless whether you are white or not) in the recent years...etc., Sorry I can't give you a rosy picture of Ireland, though I lived there for seven years and now moved to a different country. I am originally from Asia.

Ask any immigrant living in Ireland about the immigration and then decide for yourself.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

I suggest you apply for Portuguese nationality by declaration (seeing that youre married to a Portuguese citizen). I believe the requirement is marriage for 3 years.

Once you have Portuguese nationality Ireland could be an option, otherwise avoid coming here if you want to maintain your sanity!

Thanks Joesoap101, I made it bitter to animesh, but you proved it that it is the fact.

You should get your Portuguese citizenship/passport before you think about moving anywhere.

I agree with JAJ that you should consider getting Portuguese citizenship before leaving. It has the possibility to really simplify a lot of things for you.

That said, the information you got from the Irish embassy is just wrong. Your wife does not need to go ahead and get a job. You can both go at the same time and both immediately begin looking for work.

You, the husband of a EU citizen, have a right of free movement in the who EU as long as you are travelling with your wife. They can require you to get a visa, but it is easy to get and they are required to issue it to you in almost all circumstances. Upon arrival in Ireland or the UK or Italy or Sweden you can immediately look for a job and start working..

If you are going to the UK, you should apply in advance for what they call an EEA family permit.

If you are going to Ireland, you should apply in advance for a work permit for a family member of an EU citizen. The Irish visa people appear to be very poorly trained, and so will likely not be aware of it or that they are required to issue it, but keep pushing.
