Brazil - Marriage Visas

Post by CallmeKate » Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:59 am

Hi, I'm very new at this just want a bit of general advice about marriage-visas. Can't get through to the Brazilian embassy for the life of me! Haha.

Ok I'm a UK national and I want to live in Brazil with my boyfriend, work permits are almost-impossible to get there so we plan on getting married.

Am I right in thinking I've gotta fly out there, marry him, come back and then apply for the visa from my country?

Or can I simply go there, marry him and send them the application while I'm there?

To the best of my knowledge Brazil doesn't have a fiance visa otherwise I'd happily go down that track. He's finishing the final year of university at the moment so him coming to live with me is out of the question. But I have some funds and intermediate competancy in Portuguese.

I've also gathered that the process of recieving marriage visas can take a pretty long time, so what are you suposed to do if you want to live with your spouse when your tourist visa runs out?

It's all very confusing and inconvienant to me :P

I'd appreciate any info, thanks!

All the information you need is here at the Brazilian Embassy's website:

In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

Yes I've already read both the English and Portuguese versions of the website but they don't answer my specific questions. As I can't get through to the embassy either via email or telephone I thought I'd ask for some advice here.

I'd appreciate any generic information about marriage visa applications.
