BNO Passport holder

Hi,
i am a BNO Passpost holder and have been a student living here in UK for the last 6 years. What is the procedure in order to get a full British Citizenship.

You need to get Indefinite Leave to Remain first before you can even think about British citizenship.

Thanks so much for your reply... i am 23 years old and my dad is a british citizen. is it possible for me to apply for indefinite leave to remain on the base my only parent is living here in the UK and i am still dependant on him as i am a full time international student.

How and when did your father get British citizenship?

Depending on when and how your father obtained his British citizenship, that might help you. Can you provide more details on that? Was it before you were born? Were you in the UK with him at the time?

well my father got his british citizenship by naturalisation around 1997 in Hong Kong... it was after i was born... I was in hong kong at that time with him but ive only come to UK now 6 years ago for studies... Does it help or not really???

Your father must have got it by registration, not naturalisation. Is it because he was ethnically non-Chinese and got it under the special scheme?

Why did you not get British citizenship the same way? Is your mother ethnically Chinese?

i am pretty sure it was through naturalisation as i saw his certificate he did get his BNO changed under the special scheme... my mother is not ethnically chinese and to be honest i dont know why i didnt get my passport changed at the same time... is there any way i can get any way i can get one now???

You don't give enough information to even make a guess. It might help if you give the following details:

1. Where and when was your father born?
2. How and when did he get his Hong Kong British nationality?
3. Same details for your mother.

My father was born in Hong Kong but he is ethnically from pakistan. he served Under her Majesty's Service in Hong Kong for 30 years and under the special scheme was naturalised and got a British Citizenship. i was born in Pakistan and my mother was from pakistan but died soon after my birth...

I wonder if he got his British citizenship under the British Nationality Selection Scheme, put in place by section 1(3) of the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Act 1990.

Normally spouses and dependent children of successful applicants were registered as British citizens under section 1(4) of the 1990 Act. As an aside, BDTC/BNO status was lost by successful applicants.

Are you sure that your father didn't get British citizenship that way, and include you in his application? Do you have access to his British citizenship certificate? If so, what does it say?

There was a separate scheme put in place in 1997 for non-Chinese ethnic minorities in Hong Kong - if your father got his British citizenship this way it won't help you. So it's important to know the facts.
