In UK on Work Permit - Second Job Allowed???

Post by bobsterman » Sun Jan 20, 2008 6:50 pm

According to this page...
A person who has a work permit is able to work outside normal working hours, provided:
  • - it is outside of their normal working hours;
    - it is no more than 20 hours a week;
    - it is in the same profession and at the same professional level for which - the holder's work permit was issued;
But what if someone would like to do a small amount of work in a different profession? Is there a legal way to do this?

The specific situation I'm concerned with is someone in a professional/managerial job - who would like to a do a little acting/comedy on the side in their spare time - and some of this could be paid.

Is it possible to have permission to do something like this added to an existing Work Permit?

I would guess the answer would have to be no; but you could probably do it in an "amateur" way, ie unpaid apart from expenses - maybe generous expenses? - while hopefully building up a career. If your career really takes off you could apply for a work permit as an entertainer: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/workin ... rstheatre/

Good luck!

You couldn't even do it in an amateur way.

Isn't a WP holder allowed to do an additional job providing it is "part time" in nature ie 20 hours or less ? This would help the WP holders to earn a little extra income.

It has to be in the same profession, and the job description must be very similar.

Paulp, thanks for your reply. Does this mean that we have to inform HO if we are doing such a job and give them the job description ?
