Short term study visa

I am an Indian national. I plan to apply for a short term study visa for my 5 month long exchange at QMUL. The course starts on 9th Jan 2017, but I want to travel in the UK from 20th December 2016 till my course begins.

How early does the short term study visa let me enter the country? If it does not let me enter the country that early, is there any other visa option for me?
